The types are commonly known as three-tab shingles, architectural shingles, upgraded architectural shingles, and designer roof shingles. Each shingle provides durable roofing options. They offer different benefits depending on what look or purpose you may want your roof to serve.

Three-Tab Shingles: Economical Choice with Shorter Lifespan

Three-tab shingles are the most basic form of shingles and get their name from the way they are made. They are made out of a single layer of asphalt and then sliced into three tabs. They're also the lightest type of shingle, so they are far more affordable than architectural and designer shingles.

Because they're the lightest and least expensive of the asphalt shingles, you can probably guess that they provide the least protection. If you did imagine that, you're correct! Three-tab shingles can last anywhere between 10-15 years, more or less depending on weather damages.

Architectural Shingles: Enhanced Durability and Aesthetics

Also known as laminate or dimensional shingles, this is the most common type of asphalt shingle roof. During manufacturing, the base mats are given two or more layers to create a multi-dimensional appearance on your roof. Because of these extra layers and weight added, architectural shingles are exceptionally durable.

Architectural shingles last longer than three-tab shingles, which range from about 18-20 years. In fact, these shingles meet the wind-withstanding requirements in most states. As mentioned, the specific amount of time your particular architectural shingle roof will last depends on various factors.

The Superiority of Upgraded Architectural Shingles

Compared to its fraternal twin, architectural shingles, there's no doubt the upgraded roofing materials are better. This shingle is much heavier and thicker, creating more definition and giving your roof that pop and curb appeal most homeowners desire. If you don't want a basic shingle roof or the most common shingle roof in the US. Investing in an upgraded roofing material may be the right option for you.
